Cervical Rx: HPV Vaccine

Reviewed By: Joanne Poje Tomasulo, M.D., ACOG

The only way to prevent HPV infection is abstinence from sex. Use of a condom during intercourse is not completely effective at preventing spread of the virus because there may still be skin-to-skin contact below the condom.

Questions for your doctor

Here are some questions to ask your child's pediatrician about the HPV vaccine:

  1. Does your pediatrician's office have the HPV vaccine available?
  1. How should I explain these shots to my daughter?
  1. Are there any adverse reactions or side effects to the vaccinations?
  1. What should we do if there is a negative reaction to the shots?
  1. Can the HPV shots be given at the same time as other childhood vaccinations or will we have to schedule a different appointment for them?
  1. Are HPV vaccinations required by our local school district?
  1. Does my health insurance cover the cost of the vaccinations?
