Student Workout: Readin', Ridin' and 'RithmeticQuestion : I am a student and hardly get the time to do anything except my homework. How do I take out time to exercise and what kind of exercise should I do? Answer : There's nothing that says homework and exercise don't mix. A simple reading rack on a stationary bike and you've got your readin', ridin' and 'rithmetic. Many bikes these days come with reading racks built in, as there's plenty of evidence that says that exercisers are more productive. That's one of the reasons companies are putting in on-site gyms. Exercisers have been found to think more clearly during exercise and for as long as four hours afterward. So, exercising can help with your studies. I know I often write whole articles in my head or solve a tricky problem from work during my daily run. As far as type of exercise -- concentrate on cardiovascular (aerobic-type) exercise like walking, running, stationary bike riding or an aerobics class. If your time is limited, do interval work -- short, high-intensity bursts over the course of the session. Abdominal exercises will help tone the underlying muscles as the fat comes off. And weight training is good for everyone. It helps prevent bone loss and tones up your muscles. You can sneak in a set here or there whenever you take a break from writing your Psych 101 paper.
