Various medications are used to treat heart conditions. Alpha blockers block the effects of certain hormones in the body that cause rapid heartbeat. Inotropes strengthen heart contractions, while patients with heart valve disease may need antibiotics prior to surgical or dental procedures. Aspirin helps prevent heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events.
