Biography:

An internationally-recognized cardiac surgeon, Dr. Stephenson is the Ford-Webber professor of Surgery and the Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Wayne State University in Detroit. He is also the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Detroit Medical Center and Harper Hospital. A graduate of Marquette University and Marquette Medical School, Dr. Stephenson completed his general surgery residency and a cardiovascular research fellowship at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he was Chief Surgical Resident. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania, where he stayed on and joined the faculty, eventually becoming a professor of surgery and being awarded the prestigious William J. White Professorship in Surgery. While on the faculty at Penn, Dr. Stephenson was a cardiothoracic surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and the Philadelphia Children's Hospital. The author or co-author of over 280 scientific papers, books and book chapters, Dr. Stephenson also authored State of the Heart, a practical and highly readable guide to the heart and heart surgery for non-physicians. He is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, with over 20 years of service in the U.S. Army Reserves. He has held numerous command positions and won several distinguished-service decorations, and was on staff at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during Operation Desert Storm.
