Sexual Problems from Abuse?

By:
Ruth Westheimer

Question :

My current significant other was sexually abused by a boyfriend when she was around 13 years old. She feels no sexual stimulation and read somewhere that this may be the result of the abuse she experienced during her youth. Is there any way for her to get her sexual sensation back?

Answer :

Sexual abuse can lead to a person's having sexual difficulties later in life. Usually this can be treated through therapy, so I would recommend that your girlfriend see a sex therapist. The therapist will probably see her alone for the first few sessions and then want to see you.

Since this abuse was at the hands of a boyfriend rather than a parent, which causes even more psychological trauma, I believe there's a good chance that she can overcome it. But she probably won't be able to do it on her own, so convince her to go to a sex therapist, or some other counselor, as soon as possible.
