Varicose Veins: Is Laser Surgery the Best Procedure?By:
I am seeking information about the new laser surgery for varicose veins. I understand it can be used instead of vein-stripping surgery. What are the pros and cons of these alternatives?
Pat
Laser surgery for varicose veins is best suited to smaller diameter varicosities and to tiny spider veins. Large ropy varicosities that extend from groin to ankle are best treated by traditional vein ligation (tying off) and stripping.
The laser approach does not require any incisions, but during the procedure itself one may feel a stinging or snapped-by-rubber-bands type of sensation. Vein stripping involves a series of tiny incisions along the length of the vein and may be done with local anesthesia injections or while under general anesthesia, depending on size of the vein and preferences of surgeon and patient. With surgery, the varicosity is gone immediately, while with the laser surgery it may take a while for all the blood to be absorbed and there may be discoloration of the overlying skin; occasionally multiple treatments are required. Both approaches generally require keeping off one's feet for at least several days and wearing medical-grade support hose for weeks.
General and vascular surgeons and some plastic surgeons do vein stripping, while dermatologists or plastic surgeons may do the laser surgery. Any good doctor will discuss all options with you, even if that doctor does not perform one of them, and will make recommendations based on your particular needs and problem. No matter which approach, seek out a doctor who has extensive experience with that type of surgery and is qualified to perform it -- and to treat any complications that may result.
